Tonejet is ready to install its first digital cyclone can printing system in the UK after Bevcraft Group decided to invest in technology for their new Peterborough facility.

Bevcraft is headquartered in Mullingar, Ireland and provides a range of services to customers in the booming craft brewing industry in its home market, the UK and Europe.

The company offers bespoke packaging solutions including labeling and heat shrink tubing for branding.

The Tonejet system enables the company to offer a short-term service tailored directly to the can, “without the minimum order quantity restrictions of traditionally printed cans”.

The potential for direct printing on cans has been explored for some time.

Bevcraft chief operating officer Dv Fenton said that despite the impact of the pandemic, the company believes it is “the right investment at the right time.”

CFO Ciarán Gorman described the Tonejet Cyclone system as a “total game changer”.

“It will provide us with an inexpensive, environmentally sound alternative for decorating small batches of cans from 1 to 50,000 units – still small quantities for the can industry,” he said.

Tonejet installed its first Cyclone in Canada in 2019. The Bevcraft sale is a double milestone as it is also the first Cyclone system in Europe.

Tonejet’s unique 600 dpi electrostatic printing technology does not use nozzles like other inkjet printhead systems. A thin layer of highly pigmented ink is deposited, with Tonejet claiming to use one-tenth the amount of ink used by competing systems, with “the lowest cost per can of any digital printing process”.

After printing, the cans are overcoated in the same manner as standard cans using a conventional thermoset gravure printing system. The Cyclone can print 60 cans per minute and operate as a pallet-to-pallet system.

Rob Day, CEO of Tonejet, told Printweek, “Bevcraft is exactly the type of customer we are aiming for. They are already in the soda can and craft beer business and this is a new feature and extra tool in their tool box. “

Tonejet is based in Melbourn, Hertfordshire, and its proximity to Peterborough will also be “incredibly convenient” for both companies, Day said.

The installation is ready for operation in Q2 / Q3. Although the pricing for the system was not disclosed, the ROI was around two and a half years, according to Day.

“BevCraft’s Cyclone installation gives European craft brewers a completely new option for packaging supply. Crucially, artisanal beverage makers, many of whom are carbon neutral, can cost-effectively produce small batches without using plastic labels or sleeves, which can be problematic to recycle, ”he said.

Day said recyclability is increasingly a priority, with the Canadian province of Quebec considering a total ban on heat shrink tubing.

In addition to the booming market for craft brewing at home and abroad, the US trend for “hard seltzer” should also spread to Europe and further increase the demand for short-term, faster decoration for cans.

Bevcraft also offers a mobile canning service. The other UK office is in St. Helens, Merseyside.
