Stay up to date on everything that’s happening in the wonderful world of AM through our LinkedIn community.
As sustainability-focused initiatives continue to gain momentum in the AM world (stay tuned to 3dpbm’s sustainability AM focus throughout the month of May), UK 3D printing filament brand, Filamentous, started the Eco Responsible 3D Printing Alliance – an initiative to promote sustainable additive manufacturing practices.
While 3D printing is fundamentally less wasteful than traditional, subtractive manufacturing processes, the increase in raw material extraction and use – especially plastic – can adversely affect our planet if sustainable solutions cannot be implemented.
Filamentive is committed to sustainability through three added value factors:: recycled materials – as high a percentage of recycled plastics as possible instead of new goods; Design for Circular Economy – 100% recyclable cardboard rolls and packaging materials; Financing of reforestation and the generation of renewable energies together with Ecologi.
The environmental benefits include providing a sustainable source of raw materials for the 3D printing market while reducing the environmental impact of plastic-rich products. The initiative also aims to minimize plastic use in the diminishing landfills and avoid the depletion of the earth’s finite oil supplies, while at the same time reducing energy requirements compared to producing new, virgin polymers. All of this helps offset the CO2 emissions from business operations.
By promoting these initiatives as a holistic approach to sustainability in 3D printing, members of the alliance can use the Eco Responsible 3D Printing Alliance as a tool to communicate their commitment to sustainability.
In addition, alliance members are listed as partners in a specially curated directory that lists the name of the company / organization and contact details as well as their area of expertise (e.g. 3D printing service, design consulting, etc.).
In addition to the primary environmental benefit, this also opens up business opportunities for companies that use 3D printing. This enables a higher brand value and an improved USP as well as concrete marketing advantages such as lead generation, SEO improvement and content for social channels.
SGD 3D – one of the UK’s leading on-demand 3D printing services – will be one of several alliance members. “We are proud to support this program. Conservation has been a hot topic over the years and it is our responsibility to do everything we can to protect the environment. This new standard will show how the 3D printing industry responds responsibly to these challenges, especially when it comes to plastic waste, ”said Sam Gribben, Managing Director of SGD 3D.
The Eco Responsible 3D Printing Alliance is currently open to Business users of filament materialsand includes permission to use the logo for digital and print marketing. The former is also an HTML hyperlink to a special website that explains the motivations and positive results of the initiative in more detail. Soon there will also be a special directory listing all members of the alliance for maximum credibility and awareness.
Filamentive’s vision for the Eco Responsible 3D Printing Alliance is to curate a group of like-minded companies and organizations to drive positive change in 3D printing. This has a noticeable effect on increasing resource efficiency, reducing environmental pollution and using a circular economy.
In this context, Filamentive has also committed to closing the loop in 3D printing by ensuring that recycling, pelleting for secondary markets, biological treatment and / or chemical recycling do not result in landfill waste. Trials are ongoing and Filamentive is working with partners to ensure minimum service to current customers by the fourth quarter of 2021.
